Summary:
This is a responsible non-supervisory position.
The Van Driver will safely transport program consumers to and from our Day Program Daily, and provide other transportation to program consumers as assigned.
The Van Driver will maintain the cleanliness of the vehicle as well as ensure the vehicle is in safe working order by bringing maintenance needs to the attention of the Program Director; and assisting in ensuring maintenance needs to promptly addressed.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Assists the Program Director and staff in preparing daily van route so all program consumers are picked up on time, and returned home as per family or caregivers expectations.
Reads and interprets maps and driving directions to plan the mist efficient route for program consumers, and reads and interprets road signs in English.
Consistently conducts a pre-trip safety inspection of the vehicle; and, immediately reports any maintenance needs to the Program Director or other assigned staff.
Operates assigned vehicle in a safe and courteous manner, consistently follows traffic laws, and is on time with program consumer pick-ups and drop-offs.
Assists program consumers as necessary with boarding and de-boarding the van.
Serves a positive role model to program consumers and represents FPS well with families, caregivers, and throughout the community.
Maintains reasonable order on the van among program consumers; and, appropriately addresses any behavior issues with program consumers while riding the van.
Promptly reports such incidents to the Program Director, and completes Incident Reports as requested.
Provides a communication link between program consumers, their families and caregivers, to staff as appropriate.
Attends and participates in staff meetings and Program meetings as requested.
Maintains cleanliness of assigned vehicle(s), inside and out, and fuels vehicle as necessary.
Maintains an accurate, up-to-date record of vehicle maintenance and schedule, and coordinates with the Program Director to ensure vehicle maintenance issues are promptly addressed.
Maintains trip/mileage logs, fuel purchase records as requested.
Completes incident reports, accident reports, vehicle condition reports and other records as requested.
Responds immediately to accident or medical emergencies by notifying emergency response providers and rendering First Aid until emergency personnel arrive; and immediately reports such incidents to the Program Director.
Attend, participate in, and complete trainings and certification programs as assigned.
Cooperatively performs other duties as assigned to support the mission and Core Values of FPS.
Skills in:
Consistently maintain a safe driving record
Read maps to get directions, understand directions in English, both in writing and verbally
Develop a daily route for pickups and drop offs which ensures program consumers are on time
Drive a multi-passenger vehicle safely and appropriately
Communicate effectively with program consumers, families and caregivers, community professionals and vendors, and other staff, both orally and in writing
Prepare accurate and concise reports
Use a computer to enter data, complete reports, and communicate via email
Physically access and independently mobilize self in a wide range of physical plants and settings
Physically assist program consumers in boarding and de-boarding the van
Recognize vehicle maintenance and repair issues
Physically and independently clean vehicle inside and out
Physically administer CPR and First Aide to program consumers as needed
Effectively diffuse behavior incidents with program consumers and problem solve minor incidents/issues
Establish and maintain friendly and respectful relationships with program consumers, families and caregivers, other staff, and community vendors and professionals
Maintain program consumer confidentiality
Develop and maintain vehicle maintenance schedule
Be flexible to accommodate program consumers’ needs and program needs
Minimum Qualifications:
Must possess a valid North Carolina driver’s license with a safe driving record to include no alcohol or drug related convictions within the past 10 years
Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent and be able to read, write, and speak the English language
Knowledge of North Caroline traffic laws
Knowledge of general area served by the Program, the geography, road/highway system, and map reading
Knowledge of van features and how to operate the van safely
General knowledge of vehicle maintenance needs
