It is not designed to contain or be interpreted as a comprehensive inventory of all duties, responsibilities, and qualifications required of employees to perform the job.
I.
General Statement of Duties Executes proficient and specialized tasks specific to firefighting, involving both prevention and suppression activities, along with the operation, maintenance, and driving of firefighting equipment.
II.
Distinguishing Features of the Class An individual in this role is accountable for executing proficient tasks as both a firefighter and apparatus operator, involving manual firefighting and the operation of pumps and various equipment.
The responsibilities also encompass supporting the maintenance of departmental equipment, buildings, and grounds.
The role requires the exercise of independent judgment and initiative, adhering to established practices and procedures within the department and profession, and involves the inherent risks associated with firefighting.
While operating in hazardous atmospheres, the employee is obliged to wear protective equipment provided by the department.
The nature of firefighting work exposes employees to the established standards for bloodborne pathogens.
Overall, the performance is carried out under general supervision and is evaluated through observation and inspection.

Duties and Responsibilities Illustrative Examples of Work • Responds to fire calls, deploying the appropriate apparatus to the incident site.
Safely and efficiently positions the apparatus upon arrival and operates the pump and other equipment.
• Conducts initial size-up as necessary, making informed decisions regarding search and rescue, attack strategies, safety considerations, and the requirement for additional assistance.
• Functions as a firefighter during incidents, executing search and rescue, extrication, suppression, salvage and overhaul tasks, and ensures the equipment is ready for service afterward.
• Inspects apparatus and equipment, ensuring the proper operation of all systems, including fluids, electrical systems, and brakes.
• Performs routine maintenance and cleaning of apparatus, equipment, station facilities, and grounds.
• Utilizes available time for training and self-improvement, staying updated on modern firefighting and rescue techniques.
• Maintains fire hydrants, conducts flow tests, and assists with pre-incident planning.
• Conducts tours of the fire station, providing explanations of equipment to the public, and assists with fire education programs.
• Operates a computer, entering data and generating reports related to fire service and departmental documents.
• Coordinates and participates in apparatus service testing, hose testing, ladder testing, and air quality testing.
• Performs other related duties as required or directed by the Supervising Officer on duty.

Recruitment and Selection Guidelines Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities • Possesses considerable knowledge of modern firefighting and fire prevention principles, practices, and procedures.
• Demonstrates considerable familiarity with the geographic characteristics and street layout of the City, including knowledge of hydrant locations.
• Holds a working knowledge of departmental rules and regulations.
• Exhibits skill in the operation and maintenance of firefighting equipment utilized by the department.
• Demonstrates the ability to exercise sound judgment in both routine and emergency situations.
• Possesses the capability to deal tactfully but assertively with the public and co-workers.
• Shows the ability and willingness to learn or enhance computer skills for the effective utilization of programs employed by the department.
Physical Requirements • Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of standing, walking, hearing, kneeling, reaching, feeling, grasping, pushing, pulling, bending, climbing, crawling, fingering, and performing repetitive motions.
• Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally; 50 pounds of force frequently; and 20 pounds of force constantly.
• Must possess the visual acuity to operate a fire apparatus, including the reading of dials and gauges.
Desirable Education and Experience Completion of high school education along with a minimum of five years of firefighting experience, including adequate training in apparatus and pump operations, and possession of North Carolina Fire Fighter certification is required.
Basic knowledge of computer applications and operations is essential.
Alternatively, an equivalent combination of education and experience, coupled with North Carolina Emergency Medical Technician certification is acceptable.
Additionally, certification in NC Driver Operator Pumps is necessary for this position.
Special Requirements • Possession of a valid North Carolina Class B Drivers License.
• Individual must have an acceptable driving record.
• Individual must complete the Catawba County Emergency Medical Services Training Manual with 8 months of hire date.
