Assists the Team Leader of a 2-man bridge inspection team with in-depth safety inspections of all types of highway structures, including bridges, culverts, large pipes and walkways, and measurement of sign clearances.
Takes precise measurements on structures to detect any movement, deterioration and/or damage to structural members and documents deficiencies; writes detailed structure inspection reports documenting all findings necessary for use in an asset management program which includes determining the structural integrity and safety of State highway structures.
Work is performed in an outside environment at considerable heights and slopes, possible exposure to snakes, spiders, insects, and poisonous plants.
Preference will be given to those applicants with bridge safety inspection experience.
Must be able to drive a state vehicle and/or be able to drive alone.
Safety toe shoes will be required as a condition of employment.
Location of work: Iredell and surrounding counties, office based in Statesville, NC.
May require work outside of the assigned work area
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Experience with bridge inspection equipment, i.
e.
Hydra Platforms, Man Lifts, Snooper Trucks or Boats
Experience with digital cameras, tape measures, hammers and ladders
Experience in drafting, sketching and report writing
Additional Expectations:
This person is responsible for assisting the Team Leader in carrying out in-depth inspections on bridges, light standards, culverts, pipes, sign supports & overhead walkways and preparation of reports detailing conditions found during the inspection process.
These reports are used in an evaluation process that determines the structural integrity and the capability of structures to support loads imposed on them by the traveling public and/or natural forces.
Other duties include training new inspectors, scheduling and planning the team’s activities in conformance with bridge priorities.
Work will primarily be in the county where the office is located and surrounding counties with, upon special request, occasional travel to other counties in the State.
The field work requires work in situations that are hazardous in their nature, such as traffic congestion, working on slopes, climbing of high steel, working in confined areas, and working above water or the snooper crane at considerable heights

Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology from an appropriately accredited institution; or High school or General Education Development (GED) diploma and two (2) years of progressive experience in the inspection, construction, design or maintenance of major steel or concrete bridges or other structures; or an equivalent combination of training and directly related experience.
